The Tides of Old Orchard Beach

Understanding the Tides

Ever wonder why the ocean seems to move closer and farther away each day? Tides are the reason! They are caused mainly by the Moon’s gravitational pull on Earth’s oceans.

As the Earth rotates, different areas move through tidal bulges. This creates high and low tides. Most coastal areas experience two high tides and two low tides each day.

Alignment

The Sun also plays an important role. When the Sun, Moon, and Earth line up, their combined gravitational pull creates especially high high tides and especially low low tides. These are known as spring tides.

When the Sun and Moon are at different angles, the difference between high and low tide is much smaller. These are called neap tides.

The Rise & Fall of the Tides

Here in Old Orchard Beach, the tides are constantly reshaping the shoreline. Every few hours, the beach offers a completely different experience.

During low tide, the beach widens dramatically. Expansive stretches of sand appear, making it the perfect time for walking, beachcombing, and exploring tide pools.

As the tide rises, the ocean gradually moves closer to the dunes. The deeper water creates great conditions for swimming, surfing, and relaxing while listening to the waves.

Stunning Views

Tides do more than move the ocean in and out. They also affect local wildlife, fishing conditions, and photography.

Low tide in the early morning often leaves behind beautiful reflections on the wet sand. It’s one of the best times to capture a sunrise. High tide brings rolling waves and dramatic ocean views.

Whether you’re planning a beach walk, searching for seashells, building sandcastles with the family, or hoping to capture a stunning sunrise, knowing the tides can make all the difference. Checking the tide schedule before visiting Old Orchard Beach will help you make the most of your day by the ocean.

Timing is Everything

The tides change every day. That’s why it’s always worth checking the local tide chart before heading to the beach. You may be surprised by how much the shoreline changes in just a few hours.

One visit may reveal wide stretches of sand and tide pools. A few hours later, the waves may be rolling right up to the dunes.

Whether you’re an early riser hoping to catch a breathtaking sunrise, a family planning a day of beach fun, or someone looking for a peaceful walk along the shore, understanding the tides helps you make the most of your visit.
