Keeping up with a Resolution

Last month we celebrated the new year, 2025. Did you make any resolutions? If not, it’s not too late! I specifically chose February to talk about it because it’s likely a resolution or two has dropped off your radar. So, I thought what better way to talk about keeping resolutions than to give a few pointers on what to do to keep them.

February is a challenging month, it’s right in the middle of winter but with dedication it can be a great month to keep the resolutions because there is not that much else to do, right?

It’s wise to be picky about what you want to change and be very specific with your goals. One goal to change or one habit to change is a good place to start. It can be easy to get overwhelmed if too many goals are being achieved. It gives you a chance to set clear goals and keeping consistent. Give the changes some time so that they become habit. It takes about three weeks for a change to become a habit.

If you want to lose weight, start out small, no marathons at first! Go into it knowing that you will accept the weight will not come off like magic. If you want to be healthier, try one thing at a time so you know what made you feel good. Try a new recipe source that is geared towards healthy living. If you want to start reading books more, start small and work your way up for instance, read ten minutes and then a chapter at a time.

Change doesn’t happen overnight especially when you are disciplining yourself. That’s all it is, discipline. The motivation is there, the will is there, it is just a matter of committing to the change even though you don’t want to. Doing it no matter how many times your mind says no. Focus on one step at a time, not the whole staircase.

Setbacks will happen and you have to accept it and move forward. Be kind to yourself, you will make changes no matter how fast or slow! Reevaluate and see if your goal needs to be adjusted. Be flexible with your progress. Remind yourself you can do this. Journal your progress and setbacks so you can see how far you have come when you look back at the change you made. Love that your making small steps towards a goal you set. Love yourself because you will look back and have no regrets.

One way to keep consistent with your resolution is by having accountability.  Tell everyone your goal so you can update them the next time you see them. People like to ask how you are doing and this way you will have something to keep them updated on.

You can set your goal in motion by joining some sort of entity that supports the goal as well. The Old Orchard Beach community offers so many things that would help keep one accountable.  The events page has a wealth of resources to check out. There are nature walks by Scarborough Land Trust, retreats at Ferry Beach Retreat & Conference Center, community dinners put on by OOB365, spas such as East Coast Traveling Spa, yoga at Elevate Cafe and so much more. If you go looking for it you will surely find it!

In conclusion, it’s really about making changes to a rather permanent routine. It’s about rewiring your thinking; it’s mind over matter. It’s about making a committment so you can say later on you did it. It’s far more troubling than to be in the future and had not completed something. Above all give it time, be kind to yourself and of course, reward yourself by staying with us at the Alouette Beach Resort!
