What is Jane’s Walk?
Jane’s Walk is a global festival of free, volunteer-led walking conversations inspired by community activist Jane Jacobs. Jane’s Walks combine the simple act of exploring a place with personal observations, local history, and civic engagement.

Below the Falls: An Interactive Walking Tour Along the Saco River
Imagine strolling along the Saco River, where every step takes you deeper into the stories of the past and the wonders of the present. The Saco Riverwalk Tour is an immersive experience that combines history, ecology, and community engagement into a 30-to 45-minute journey.
Through a mix of audio storytelling, historical photos, interactive quizzes, and even citizen science opportunities, you’ll uncover the river’s role in shaping Saco—from its industrial past to its vital ecosystem today. Learn about the people who built their lives around this waterway, the wildlife that calls it home, and the efforts being made to preserve it for future generations.
Perfect for locals and visitors alike, this self-guided adventure ends with a moment of reflection, inspiring you to see the Saco River not just as a backdrop, but as a living, breathing part of our community.
This tour isn’t just about history—it’s about connection. The more we learn about our environment, the more we care about it. By experiencing the Saco Riverwalk Tour, you’re not just learning about the past—you’re becoming part of the future of this incredible resource.
Step into the story. Walk. Learn. Connect.
Accessibility:
The steps down the Riverwalk are steep and not navigable with mobility challenges. The tour can still happen by either sitting in the park and following through the online platform, or they can go down the road adjacent to the Riverwalk path – meeting back up further down the way. The walk back does have a bit of an incline.
Starting & Ending Location:
Riverfront Park is located on Front Street, just to the right after the train trestle. There is a concrete patio with blue Adirondack chairs.
