SUMMARY:Carbon Leaf
DESCRIPTION:Carbon Leaf’s fifteenth studio album\, Time is the Playground is both a call to action and an embrace of the moment. Marrying nostalgic storytelling to nuanced\, folk-infused indie rock\, the Richmond\, Virginia band embroiders heartfelt melody and harmony with acoustic and electric instrumentation to create a 12-song rumination on time\, love and personal growth that’s equal parts urgent epiphany and contented exhalation. \n“Everybody says people don’t listen to albums anymore\,” mulled Carbon Leaf frontman Barry Privett\, holed up in a coastal cottage. “So\, the challenge for us was to make something that felt good to get through from beginning to end … to listen to like a story.” \nOriginally formed as a college cover band in 1992 and with over 3\,500 famously enthused live shows together\, Carbon Leaf helped to define the aughts indie rock that they ultimately outgrew and outlasted. They first earned national recognition with “The Boxer\,” a song that won the American Music Awards 2002 New Music Award and made Carbon Leaf the first unsigned band to perform before millions on the AMAs. \n“The Boxer” entered regular radio rotation\, Carbon Leaf’s tours grew bigger and better\, and within a couple of years they quit their day jobs and inked a record deal. The band’s fanbase snowballed\, drawn to their infectious spirit of commitment\, empathy\, communion\, and self-reliance – not to mention supremely crafted songs with ultra-relatable\, thought-provoking lyrics. \nAfter a trio of charting albums for Vanguard Records\, multiple songwriting awards and headlining shows\, Carbon Leaf opted to return to the complete creative control of their indie roots. Guitarist Terry Clark\, who co-founded the band with Privett and multi-instrumentalist Carter Gravatt\, converted his garage into the band’s Two-Car Studio\, where they’ve recorded releases for their own Constant Ivy imprint ever since. Carbon Leaf’s DIY spirit even extended to re-recording their three Vanguard albums in order to regain the rights. \nTime is the Playground is Carbon Leaf’s first full-length album in a decade\, during which they released two EPS and a 27-song live performance album and Blu-ray. Time is the Playground gathers the best of songs written\, in fits and starts\, over 15 years\, alongside brand new ideas. Privett dusted off old demos and shut himself away for months to finish their stories\, while also honing recent compositions. With Clark engineering\, Carbon Leaf – completed by longtime bassist Jon Markel and drummer Jesse Humphrey – spent a year and a half recording and mixing the resulting songs. \n“Thinking about these disparate pieces of music\, I began ruminating on time itself\,” Privett recalled. “The band’s been together a long time. You mature a bit and see yourself in place on the timeline … rolling around the scenes of love and growth.” \nMasterfully melding saturated AC/DC guitar and squelchy Cars synth\, “Backmask 1983” is a fun flipbook of evocative era emblems – Farah Fawcett\, “Satanic Panic\,” Time Life Books\, Bigfoot and more – that traverses the simultaneous nexus of Privett’s childhood/adolescence and the world’s analog/digital ages. It’s about morphing into a new person and a new planet with wide-eyed wonder and a longing to believe. “Without a whole lot of information\, the mystery of things felt so heightened\,” recalled Privett of growing up pre-Internet. “I wanted to capture some of that but also have fun with it.” \n“I want what we create to resonate with ourselves\, to the level that we want to play it for a long time to come\, and where we want others to hear it and experience it\,” Privett concluded. “Hopefully\, listeners can glean the pieces from it that they identify with.” \nTime is the Playground will be accompanied by the tireless touring almost synonymous with Carbon Leaf\, who’ve become a model for self-managing bands in the digital landscape. \n

SUMMARY:Max Creek
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nIn those rare instances that a band reaches its sixth decade\, it’s usually a result of stardom. It’s easy enough to keep things together when each member has a jet and techs on retainer and the world tour rolls around every few years. But that’s not how Max Creekhas done it. \nIn 40+ years Max Creek has been small\, big\, regionally-huge\, medium\, and any other size one can think of; they’ve never graced the cover of Rolling Stone\, but you’d be hard pressed to find a music fan in the Northeast that hadn’t heard of them. Well then\, how’d they do it? If you knew Max Creek you’d answer simply\, “they just did.” \nCreek lacks pretense; there is no hip style or genre-title that can define them. From the beginning they’ve mixed anything they liked—rock\, country\, reggae\, soul\, jazz\, calypso—in with their own great songs and it’s all just come out sounding like Creek. As such they’ve never been the hot item in the flavor-of-the-year club yet they’ve also never gone out of style. \nMoreover\, Creek exudes confidence but lacks ego; each member is an incredible musician but that’s never been what it was about. But that is all things Creek is not\, and what Creek is is far more important. \nThe band is certainly joyous\, and their stage is full of smiles and laughter\, both during and between songs. All one has to do is glance into the crowd to see that the feeling is contagious. \nCreek is also much more engaging than the average band\, sculpting lengthy shows on-the-fly from their 200+ song catalog with rockers\, ballads\, deep jams and crowd sing-alongs all tucked into their perfect places. \nAnd Creek is\, most definitely\, a family. 40-odd years in\, the audience is a multi-generational stew; it’s not uncommon to witness old-school Creek Freeks getting down with their teenage (or older!) kids. \nCreek itself is multigenerational. Though the “front line” of guitarist Scott Murawski\, keyboardist Mark Mercier and bassist John Rider has remained intact since the mid-70s\, the current drums and percussion team of Bill Carbone and Jamemurrell Stanley weren’t even born when Max Creek was founded. \n

SUMMARY:portBowie
DESCRIPTION:portBOWIE is Maine’s premier homage to the music of David Bowie. It’s not a band that stresses the visuals and costumes; rather\, this band focuses on Bowie’s MUSIC\, diving deep and bringing out the essence of his songs\, whether it’s a big hit or a deep cut. \nIn 2015\, singer Mat Zaro was invited to assemble a group for a battle of the bandsplaying David Bowie’s music. That band included drummer Luc Bergeron. It went so well that Mat approached Luc about forming a permanent group. In January of 2017\, this new group\, at the time named “The Blackstar White Duke Band\,” played Bowie’s last album\, “Blackstar\,” in its entirety\, gaining admiration and respect fromlive audience members and YouTube commenters from around the world. \nZaro and Bergeron co-lead the group\, which was renamed portBOWIE in 2018; other members are Scott Hughes and Jerry Perron on guitars\, Jim Goss on keyboards\, Stu Mahan on bass\, and Andrew Doody on saxophones. They’ve performed themed shows through the years and have done full performances of the albums “Ziggy Stardust\,” “The Man Who Sold the World\,’ “Liveandwell.com\,” “Stage\,” “Station to Station\,” “Hunky Dory\,” and “Blackstar\,” to the enjoyment of audiences in Maine\, New Hampshire\, and Massachusetts. \n2026 will mark the 10th anniversary of the release of “Blackstar” and the 50th anniversary of the release of “Station to Station\,” so shows in 2026 will include a complete end-to-end performance of “Blackstar” and all of the songs from “Station to Station” – two albums that Bowie stated were his favorite to listen back to. For these performances they will have some special guests\, including Adam Montminy on Tenor Saxophone and Sean Slaughter (The Masterstroke Queen Experience and John Hughes Radio) on vocals. \n

SUMMARY:Toby McAllister & the Sierra Sounds and Ward Hayden & the Outliers and Ross Gregor Adam
DESCRIPTION:Toby McAllister \nToby McAllister’s music is steeped in the beauty and rhythm of Maine’s seasons — from crisp autumn air to long summer days. Best known as the founding member of Sparks The Rescue\, Toby has been making music since childhood and spent his 20s touring the world in a van with his bandmates. After settling back in Maine\, the stillness of the 2020 pandemic sparked a new wave of creativity\, leading to his solo debut Daydreamin’. That release quickly led to major support slots and new recognition. \nIn 2023\, Toby followed up with Autumn Skies\, a more introspective record about life\, love\, and rock & roll\, featuring longtime collaborators from Sparks and guest appearances by members of The Mallett Brothers Band and Old 97’s. The album earned a nomination for Album of the Year by the New England Music Awards. His latest project\, The Outsider EP\, was recorded deep in the Maine woods and shaped by personal milestones — the passing of his father and the birth of his second child. Its lead single\, “Millinocket Stars\,” is now in rotation on 98.9 WCLZ. \nBeyond original music\, Toby is a full-time performer and leads The Jameson Four\, a high-energy wedding band known for rocking receptions across New England. He’s shared the stage with acts like Carly Pearce\, Old 97’s\, The Mallett Brothers Band\, and Billy Bob Thornton & The Boxmasters — but at heart\, it’s still about the song\, the story\, and the connection. \nWard Hayden & The Outliers \nThe story of Little by Little\, the new album from Ward Hayden & The Outliers\, begins much like a Springsteen song: a long drive\, a car radio\, and the stirrings of a bigger idea. While driving to a show\, Hayden heard a fellow musician on the radio telling fans not to listen to Bruce Springsteen – not for the music\, but because of political differences. The moment lit a fire. Rather than answer with outrage\, Hayden responded the best way he knew how: through the music itself. That spark led the band to record a handful of Springsteen songs… which quickly became sixteen. \nWhat started as a passion project turned into two full-length tribute albums: Little by Little and the forthcoming Piece by Piece. These are not copycat covers – they’re reimagined through the Outliers’ distinctive lens\, blending country\, rock\, and Americana with soulful musicianship and a deep emotional core. Recorded in top-tier New England studios with longtime collaborators\, the songs reflect Hayden’s personal connection to Springsteen’s catalog\, from the working-class grit of “Youngstown” to the heartache of “Used Cars.” With Little by Little\, the band set out not to outdo The Boss – but to honor his legacy with heartfelt\, faithful reinterpretations that feel both timeless and freshly urgent. \nThroughout\, the album is tied together by Hayden’s rich vocals and the band’s tight\, road-seasoned chemistry. But it’s also shaped by something deeper: a sense of place\, purpose\, and connection. Just as Springsteen’s stories helped define the American experience\, Hayden and the Outliers are exploring their own – drawing on the push-pull of small-town roots\, the search for belonging\, and the resilience found in honest storytelling. With more original music on the way\, Little by Little is not just a tribute – it’s a mission statement. \nShow Opener: Ross Gregor Adam \nRoss Gregor Adam is a musician originally from the rolling hills of Scotland and now based in the vibrant community of South Portland\, Maine. With deep roots in traditional Scottish and Irish folk music\, he blends timeless tunes with contemporary favorites that get audiences singing\, clapping\, and dancing.

SUMMARY:Ellis Paul
DESCRIPTION:Ellis Paul doesn’t just write songs; he’s a guitar-carrying reporter who covers the human condition and details the hopes\, loves\, losses of those he observes\, turning their stories into luminous pieces of music that get under your skin and into your bloodstream. And much like the artists who have influenced him\, everyone from Joni Mitchell\, Bob Dylan and Paul Simon to the singer-songwriter who is undoubtedly his greatest inspiration\, Woody Guthrie\, Paul weaves deeply personal experiences with social issues and renders them as provocative works that are as timely as they are timeless. Born and raised in Maine\, Paul attended Boston College on a track scholarship and in the evenings became a fixture on the city’s open mic circuit. After winning a Boston Acoustic Underground songwriter competition\, he caught the ear of folk luminary Bill Morrissey\, who produced his indie album Say Something in 1993. This led to a seven-album contract with Rounder Records and the 1994 album\, Stories. \nHis songs have appeared in several blockbuster films (Me\, Myself\, and Irene; Shallow Hal\, Hall Pass) and have been covered by award winning country artists (Sugarland\, Kristian Bush\, Jack Ingram). Through a steady succession of albums of his own – a remarkable 23 releases so far – and a constant touring presence around the world\, Paul’s audience has grown into a loyal legion of fans. Along the way\, he has picked up an impressive number of awards including the prestigious Kerrville New Folk Award\, 15 Boston Music Awards\, An Honorary Doctorate from the University of Maine\, the 2019 International Acoustic Music Awards Artist of the Year and most recently his album\, The Storyteller’s Suitcase\, was named the 2019 NERFA Album of the Year. \nHis new album “55” touches on the necessity of gratitude in a difficult era of the pandemic and divided political stances on his own imprint\, Rosella Records.
